Dubrovnik

Hello from hot, humid Dubrovnik!

Yesterday we had a surprisingly fun time in Artemis, an eastern suburb of Greece not far from the Athens airport. We had booked a single night here out of necessity, after Aegean had cancelled our original flight out of Greece a few weeks ago, forcing us to stay an extra day in Athens.

Fortuitously, Artemis is just a short drive from the coast, and we found a very convenient restaurant - Archontikon - located right on the beach. It had great food, shade, and a very comfortable sea breeze to keep us cool. As a bonus, they even offered free pickup and drop-off for locals, which we took full advantage of!

This morning we had an early start and our Airbnb host kindly gave us a lift at 5:30am to the airport. The lineup to drop off our checked luggage was insanely long, but after that the rest was a breeze. We had a pleasant 90-minute flight up the coast to Dubrovnik, and the clear weather afforded us a view of the landscape below.

Our new home for the next two days overlooks the old town of Dubrovnik, and provides a pretty stunning view.

After checking in, ¾ of our family opted to stay in the air conditioning and catch up on a little sleep, but I slathered on some sunscreen and headed down the 321 steps from our apartment to the old town.

The old town of Dubrovnik is charming, but on a Saturday at the peak of tourist season it is also bustling with people. After exploring the 300m-long “Stradun” (or main street) as well as some of the narrow side streets, I opted to climb up and walk the old city walls. The walls were much less crowded (likely due in part to the rather pricey 35 euro price tag!), and provided some amazing views of the old town.

This evening all four of us walked down to the old town, did a little sightseeing, and then found a nice quiet spot for dinner just outside of the old town walls.

As I write this entry I am enjoying the view from our apartment of the old town lit up at night. Tomorrow we are still debating our plans, but it's likely going to involve a beach and some swimming! Brad out.
